Baseball Loses Two More on the Road

The Patriots traveled to #25 Freed-Hardeman University this past weekend and competed against the weather and the ranked Lions.  A half inch of snow and cold temperatures forced the four game series to be reduced to just two games and the Pats (1-5) fell in both, 7-3 and 5-4.

"We learned a lot about our team this weekend," stated Luther Bramblett.  "We were put in pressure situations and made some mistakes, but we'll learn from those and get better.  The big innings we're allowing are really hurting us right now, we must do a better job of pitching out of those."

The big innings hurt the Patriots on Saturday as they let the Lions score 3 runs in the bottom of the first and 4 in the bottom of the 7th for a 7-3 loss.  John Werner (Anaheim, CA) started and took the loss after allowing 3 runs on 2 hits in 4 innings pitched.  Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) tossed 3 innings and gave up 4 runs on a grand slam for his only hit. Rich Corrente (Chatham, ON) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for his first action of the year.

At the plate, the Patriots bats were quiet for most of the game.  They scored 1 in the top of the second when Lamont Calloway (Louisville, KY) stole second and scored on a Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) single up the middle.  Bohorquez scored in the 8th inning on a stolen base and error.  The Patriots threatened in the 9th when the first two batters reached via HBP.  Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) scored on a error for the final margin.  The Pats had just 3 hits on the day, but walked 4 times and were hit 5 times by Lion pitchers and left 8 men on base.

In the Sunday game, the Patriots dominated the Lions for 7 innings and took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th, and let it slip away due to a FHU big inning.  Due to school policy at FHU, the Pats couldn't answer the Lion rally in the bottom of the 8th and the game ended.  Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA) started and went 4 innings, having to come out after a injury.  He scattered 4 hits and pitched out of some jams.  Cory Klinger (Rushsylvania, OH) tossed 3 innings, giving up 2 runs and punching out 4.  Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) suffered the bad luck loss, tossing an inning and allowing 3 unearned runs.

The Bat Pats tallied 8 hits with Bohorquez leading the way with a 2-3 game.  He scored a run and added 2 stolen bases.  Tyler Steiner (Coral Glades, FL) added a 2 RBI single and Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) had a RBI single.  Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) doubled and scored on a RBI single by Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY), while Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) singled and scored a run.

The Patriots return to the field this weekend against Culver Stockton for the home opener.
