Patriots Clobber the Bears

Following a slow start, the St. Catharine Patriots (15-9, 8-6) cruised to a 91-60 victory over the visiting Shawnee State Bears (8-16, 2-11 MSC) on Thursday night.

With a sloppy victory over the Wilberforce Bulldogs behind them, the St. Catharine Patriots needed to recover quickly against a struggling Shawnee State Bear squad on Thursday. The Bears came into the contest sitting in last place of the Mid-South Conference, posting only two victories on the year. However, this did not stop the Bears from battling the Patriots to a 37-37 tie at the break.

Unfortunately for the Bears, the Patriots would find their groove once more in the second half. After trading baskets in the first two possessions of the half the Patriots would jump out to a 53-39 lead before the Bears were able to stop their scoring torrent with 15:08 remaining. Less than a minute later Raymon Austin (Cleveland, Ohio) would slam home two of his season high 28 points to spark, yet another, Patriot run. Late in the half the Patriots showed their poise as the Bear frustration started to show with the assessment of three technical fouls, one of which was assessed to the bench. With just under two minutes remaining Tyler Smothers (Lexington, Ky.) found pay dirt, when he forced his way to the basket, propelling the Patriots to a 91-60 victory.

The Patriots will return to Lourdes Hall Saturday when they attempt to avenge an earlier loss to the Rio Grande Red Storm at 4 PM.
