Patriot's Split with Grenadiers in Home Opener

The Patriots finally played another game yesterday, splitting a DH with visiting Indiana University Southeast.  IUSE won the opener 7-5 and the Pats came from behind to take the nightcap, 7-5 in a shortened 6 inning game due to darkness.

In the opener, both teams traded runs in the first inning.  IUSE plated 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning off of Bruce Tolliver (Whittier, CA)  who earned the loss in his third of an inning.  The Patriots started Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA), who allowed a unearned run while punching out 3. CJ Gant (Louisville, KY) tossed 1.2 innings, allowing no runs and no hits.  Alex Knowles (Huntington Beach, CA) tossed a perfect frame and Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) threw 2 innings.  Claunch allowed a run on 2 hits.

At the plate, six Pats recorded base knocks.  Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) went 1-2 with a run and 2 stolen bases.  Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY) went 1-3 with a RBI.

In the nightcap, the Pats were led by Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) who went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI's.  Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) went 2-3 with 2 RBI's and a stolen base.  Bohorquez went 1-2 with 2 runs and 2 stolen bases.

On the bump, Eric Donnelly (Coral Springs, FL) picked up the win, tossing 1 inning.  John Werner (Anaheim, CA) started and tossed a perfect frame.  Freshman Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, KY) saw his first action of college baseball, tossing .2 innings - surrendering 5 runs (3 earned).  He walked 3 and gave up 2 hits.  Rich Corrente (Chatham, ON) threw 1.1 innings and allowed no runs.  Cory Klinger (Rushylvania, OH) tossed a scoreless 5th inning and Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) earned the save with his scoreless 1 inning frame.

The Patriots return to action this weekend at home, when they face the visiting Indiana Tech Warriors.  They will play a four game set on Saturday and Sunday.
