Bowling (W)

As hosts of the Mid-South Conference bowling tournament, the St. Catharine College bowling teams had high hopes of hauling in some championship hardware. But fate was not kind to Larry Luvisi’s teams as both the men and women failed to win a match at Ken Bowl Lanes in Louisville.

With each match as best of seven, the SC women, who were defending tournament champions, fell to 4-0 to Campbellsville in the opener to fall into the loser’s bracket. There it looked like the Patriot women would regroup as they took a 3-1 lead against University of the Cumberlands. But Cumberlands got hot and won the next three games to take the match and end St. Catharine’s chance for a repeat. “They (Cumberlands) just bowled better than we did,” said Luvisi.

The SC men also had a tough loss, theirs coming in the first match against Bethel. In that match it took eight games to decide as the teams tied in the decisive seventh game. The Patriots then fell to Campbellsville 4-0 to exit the tournament.

The University of Pikeville won the men’s title with a 4-0 win over Union College in the championship match. Bethel University upset the University of Pikeville to take the women’s title.

In singles action Shawn West (Louisville, Ky.) and Nicole Deman (Lakemoor, Ill.) came away with top five finishes. Both West and Denman were leading the field going into the last contest, but were unable to come out on top. West came away with a second place finish while Denman finished just outside of a trophy in third.

But for the St. Catharine women the loss did not mean the end of the season. By finishing in the top 64 teams in the nation, the women Alley Pats qualified for The United States Bowling Congress sectional tournament. That tournament will take place on March 14th, 15th, and 16th in Smyrna, Tennessee.
