Cammuse Keeps Cardinal Batters at Bay

Defense was the name of the game as the St. Catharine Lady Patriots (6-5, 4-0 MSC) battled the Concordia Cardinals (4-4) in a two game set on Monday. After a rainy spring break trip in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the St. Catharine Lady Patriots welcomed the above freezing temperatures at Salt River Electric Field on Monday. In game one, Krystal Cammuse (Frankfort, Ky.) dominated the Cardinal hitters as she fanned eight batters while only surrendering three hits and three walks. In the top of the fourth the Cardinals were able to sneak a run home when Kortney Loar’s single scored Cheyenne Brierly for the first run of the game. However, the Patriots would strike back quickly when Shelbi Thornhill (Harrodsburg, Ky.) would crush a ball over the left field fence with the wind blowing the opposite direction. After forcing extra innings, the Patriots would fall victim to untimely errors, when a wild throw allowed for the Cardinal to score the go ahead run in the top of the eighth. Unfortunately for the Patriots, their offense would be unable to recover, allowing the Cardinals to take game one 3-1. In game two, the Cardinal offense caught fire as they were able to plate 14 runs in four innings. After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the second, the Patriot offense would rebound when Taylor Steff (Louisville, Ky.) would push across one of her three runs batted in on the day, cutting the lead to one. However, the Cardinals would strike for six in the top of the third and six more in the top of the fourth, propelling them to a 14-4 victory. For the Patriots Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) provided a bright spot in relief, as she struck out two Cardinal hitters in her one inning pitched. The Lady Patriots will jump back into conference action Wednesday, March 12th when they travel to face defending conference champion Lindsey Wilson College (13-3, 0-0 MSC) at 1 PM CST.
