Tennis Soars over the Eagles

The St. Catharine Patriots were flying high on Tuesday after defeating in-state rival Asbury University 5-4.

The Patriot “Racketeers” came into the contest hungry for a victory after dropping their first match of the season to the Cumberland’s by inches. In number one doubles the Patriots showcased their skills as Andre Jacomini (Curitiba, Brazil) and Ethan Rowton (Paducah, Ky.) outlasted the Eagle’s Layton and Vavel 8-7. The Patriots continued their success during number two doubles as Felipe Barrientoes (Cali, Columbia) and Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo (Spain) pounded Marger and Gibson 8-2.

With the Patriots leading 2-1 after doubles action Ethan Rowton continued his winning ways in number two doubles defeating Veval 6-3 and 6-2. Rowton’s success was followed in number three doubles when Barrientoes put on a true display of athleticism to defeat Woods 6-0 and 6-0. In the number four spot, a much improved Tyler Glover (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) fell in a close match to Harris 7-5 and 6-1. Following the fourth match, Ivan Kerkoc-Portillo sealed the win for the Patriots when he took Asbury’s Gibson to an extra set to win 2-1 (4-6, 6-4, 7-5). “It’s good to get a win over a very strong team” said Head Coach Jim Coomer. “This was a hard fought battle, and our kids were able to overcome their obstacles.”

The Patriots will return to conference play on Friday when the Campbellsville Tigers come to town for a 2 PM showdown at the St. Catharine Tennis Complex.
