Patriots Win Series at Bluefield

The Patriots traveled for their first Mid-South Conference series of the year and came away with their second series win in a row, beating Bluefield College 7-1, 2-0 and losing 5-3. The series win moves the Pats into a second place tie in the MSC.

"It was a good weekend for us," stated Luther Bramblett.  "Our arms threw really well overall and we made most of the routine plays.  We did just enough, against a tough Bluefield squad, at the plate to get two wins. It's always good to win on the road in our league."

In the opener, John Werner (Anaheim, CA) won his second MSC game of the year, quieting the conference leading offense for 7 innings.  Werner gave up a unearned run on 4 hits and punched out 5 Rams.  Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) tossed the final two frames, allowing a single and striking out 2.

The Patriots took the lead in the top of the first when Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) singled home Alfredo Bohorquez (Marcaibo, Venezuela).  The Pats scored again in the fourth on a Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) double, scoring Danny Jimenez (Fountain Valley, CA) who reached on a single.  It was a 2-1 game until the 8th, then the Patriots plated 2 runs, with Kissel adding another RBI on a single.  SC blew the game open in the 9th, scoring 3 runs on RBI singles by Ty Broady (Greenville, KY) and Josh Whitmer (Taylorsville, KY).  Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) went 2-3 and Kissel and Broady both added 2 hit games.

On Saturday, the Patriots rode the arm of senior Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA).  Nelson tossed a complete game shutout, scattering 7 hits and punching out 3 in his 9 inning effort.  Francisco Gonzalez was the top Bat Pat on the day, going 2-4 with 2 doubles and the game winning 2 RBI's.  The Patriots scored all they needed in the top of the fifth after a 2 out HBP by Kissel.  Bohorquez singled and Gonzlaez doubled off the left field wall for all the cushion Naleon needed.  Guevara added another 2 hit game for the Pats.

In the final game, the Patriots jumped all over the Rams starter in the second inning, scoring 3 runs.  Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) singled home Broady for the first run and Drew Kissel doubled home 2 more.  The Rams answered in the bottom half, plating 5 runs off starter Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA).  Borkowski allowed 4 earned on 5 hits.  Trenton Claunch tossed the next 3.1 innings and shut down the Ram bats.  Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) tossed a scoreless 6th.  Diaz was the only Bat Pat with 2 hits.

The Patriots are scheduled to play at home Tuesday with Union College at 3:00.
