Patriots Clip Eagles In DH Sweep

The Patriot softball team got back on the winning track Wednesday with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Asbury Eagles. Holly Smith’s squad snapped a four game losing streak with the two wins to improve to 10-15 for the season.

St. Catharine’s offense wasted little time getting in gear in game one as they scored seven runs in the first two frames. They built that lead to 12-0 after four innings before the Eagles (6-4) plated five runs in the fifth inning to avoid being a victim of the run rule. Asbury added a single run in the seventh for the final 12-6 decision. Tiffany Wickline was the winning pitcher as she hurled four scoreless innings to start the game. Wickline also added two hits in the Patriots’ 15 hit attack. Taylor Steff was 4-4 for the day and Shelbi Thornhill and Brandi Hood each had two hits, one of Hood’s being a solo homer.

In game two the Patriots again struck early with three runs in the first inning and six in the second en route to a 9-0 five-inning win. Brittany McKee homered twice and had three RBI’s and Thornhill had a solo shot. Hood again had two hits. The Eagles mustered only one hit in the game off two Patriot pitchers. McKee went the first four innings, allowing the lone hit which was a windblown double that eluded three Patriot players. Crystal Cammuse pitched a perfect fifth inning with two strikeouts.

The Patriots return to Mid-South Conference action on Friday when they host Cumberland University in a twin bill starting at 2:00.
