Canter Hauls in Another Coaching Award

Gary Canter, assistant wrestling coach, has secured another prestigious award for his stellar career as head coach at LaRue County High School. At last month’s Kentucky High School Wrestling Championships, Canter, who retired from LaRue County in 2013, was named the Sectional Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS).

In 2002 Canter was named as runner-up as National Coach of the Year by Wrestling USA magazine. His most recent award was quite gratifying as the Patriots assistant explained.

“It really is not as much about wins and losses as what contributions you have made to the sport,” he said. “It is quite an honor considering the states that are in our section.”

In addition to Kentucky, the states in the section include Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. All of those states are particularly strong center of high school wrestling, especially Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Each state association nominates a coach and then a committee reviews all of the nominees,” Canter added. “I knew I was nominated but pleasantly surprised when I won the award.”
