Patriot Baseball Sweep the Storm

The Patriots won their third straight weekend series in grand fashion, sweeping the University of Rio Grande, and moving into sole posession of second place in the Mid-South Conference.  St. Catharine (16-14, 10-5) won 9-6 on Saturday and swept the DH on Sunday, 3-1 and 3-2.

"We had a great weekend on the mound," commented Luther Bramblett.  "All three of our starters gave us quality starts.  We done enough at the plat and in the field to sweep a tough team at their place.  Hopefully we can get some mid-week games in to get our bats going more consistently and our other arms some much needed work."

The Patriots felt the Storm early in the opener, when Rio Grande plated 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning off starter John Werner (Anaheim, CA).  The Patriots answered with a game tying 4 run inning in the top of the 2nd, with Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) and Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) both knocking in 2 runs each.  The Pats tacked on 2 runs in both the 4th and the 8th with Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) and Adrian Garcia (Anaheim, CA) both adding RBI singles in each inning.

Werner picked up the win, tossing 6 innings.  He scattered 10 hits and punched out 6.  Trenton Claunch (Burgin, KY) tossed 2 innings and allowed a run on 2 hits and punched out 2 and Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) picked up the save with a 2 K inning.  Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) led the Pats with a 3-6 day with 2 runs and 2 stolen bases.  The foresome of Gonzalez, Rosso, Garcia and Kissel all had 2 hits and 2 RBI's each and Eric Standafer (Shelbyville, KY) added a 2 hit day.

St. Catharine won the series with another quality start by senior Andrew Nelson (Eureka, CA).  He tossed 6 innings and allowed a run on 5 hits. Nelson also tallied 9 K's.  Claunch tossed another 2 innings, allowing no hits or runs and McCoy picked up his second save in the series with his inning of work.  Kissel stayed hot for the Patriots with a RBI single in the 2nd inning and the Patriots took advantage of a Red Storm error to plate 2 runs in the 6th inning.  Gonzalez, Rosso, Standafer and Kissel were the only Bat Pats to record a base knock.

The Patriots swept the series behind a complete game effort of Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA).  Borkowski tossed 7 innings and allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits.  He had 4 K's and no walks.  The Patriots took the lead with 2 runs in the top of the 3rd inning when Bohorquez singled and later scored on a Rosso double.  Garcia then singled home Rosso.  The Pats got the final run on a Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) single scoring Garcia.  Garcia led the Pats, going 2-3 with a double, run and RBI.

The Patriots host Asbury University in a DH on Tuesday and travel to Morehead State University on Wednesday.
