Softball Bows out of MSC Tourney

Despite two spectacular pitching performances from Krystal Cammuse, the St. Catharine softball team (18-27, 14-20 MSC) bowed out of the conference tournament with two straight losses.

If anyone were to just look at the pitching stats from the Lady Patriots’ two conference tournament games, it would be easy to believe that the Patriots dominated both contests. However, this was not the case as the Patriots lost both contests in come back fashion, despite the effort from Krystal Cammuse.

In their opening round game with the Georgetown Tigers, the Lady Patriots were feeling pretty good after a fourth inning three run shot from third baseman Brittany McKee gave the Patriots a 3-1 lead heading into the sixth inning. Not to mention that until the last two thirds of the sixth, Krystal Cammuse had dominated the Tigers, tallying 11 strikeouts and surrendering only one unearned run. However, after striking out the first hitter of the inning, things went south for the Lady Patriots as hit after hit piled on, allowing the Tigers to score six runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-3 lead and victory. “Krystal pitched well enough to win” said Holly Smith. “We just couldn’t avoid one bad inning.”

In their consolation round game with the Shawnee State Bears, the bottom of the sixth became a nightmare once more as the Patriots surrendered three runs to allow the Bears to take a 4-3 lead and victory once more. Cammuse had another brilliant performance, striking out seven Bears, including a three strikeout inning in the bottom of the fifth, and surrendering zero earned runs. Unfortunately for the Patriots, the bullpen couldn’t hold up their end of the deal as Brittany Mckee, who was the offensive hero in game one, surrendered two straight hits and a walk leading to three Bear runs.

The Patriots end their 2014 season with the two losses, but will return to action in February 2015 with all but two Patriots returning. Stay tuned to for a full season wrap.
