Chris Johnson Looks for a National Tournament Berth

With the national tournament qualification deadline for track and field quickly approaching Blake Jones took his conference champion long jumper to Indiana University for another chance at a national tournament bid.

After winning the Mid-South Conference championship in the long jump, it would seem obvious that Chris Johnson (Bowling Green, Ky.) would automatically earn a spot in the national qualifying field. However, according to head coach Blake Jones, “there is never a guaranteed spot.” “Unlike all of the other sports we don’t get an automatic bid” remarked Jones. “Our kids have to make sure that they stay ahead of the rest of the nation in order to compete for a national title.”

With this in mind, Chris Johnson and Coach Jones hit the road to compete in the Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. After posting a 7.08 meter jump in the conference tournament, Johnson was unable to improve, falling to a 6.94 meter mark at Indiana. However, his jump was good enough to land him an eighth place finish out of the 16 competitors. “Chris still has another chance” said Jones. “We will find another meet to get him in, and hopefully his mark will be long enough.”
