Patriots Win Shootout Title

Sunday, September 14 - The St. Catharine soccer team traveled back to Hillsboro, Ohio to compete in the championship match of the Southern State Shootout against the host Southern State College Patriots. The game was played in high winds and was ugly from the start. Six minutes into the game, Adam Waller crossed a ball that Don Russell controlled and slotted inside the near post to put SCC up 1-0.

The wind continued to build throughout the game and the play deteriorated. During the game, the referee issued 2 yellow cards to St. Catharine and 7 yellow cards to Southern State, as the players grew increasingly frustrated with the conditions. Despite several dangerous chances by both teams, no one was able to score in the remainder of the game, and the final score stood at St. Catharine 1, Southern State 0.

With the win, St. Catharine took the Shootout Championship and four players were named to the all tournament team. The are: Goalkeeper William Johnston, who earned 2 shutouts and only gave up 1 goal in the tournament; Forward / Midfielder Don Russell, who scored 3 goals and 1 assist in the tournament, including the game winner in the championship match; Midfielder William Meza who scored 3 goals in the tournament; and Midfielder Jonathan Foster.

The Patriots now stand at 3-3 on the season and next take on Spalding University at home this coming Friday.
