Patriots drop tough one to Asbury

Coming off their first win of the season on Friday the Patriot women’s soccer team (1-2-1, 0-0 MSC) traveled to Wilmore, Ky. as they battled the Eagles of Asbury University (3-0, 0-0 KIAC).

The Patriots had opportunities early in the game when Morgan Ludwig (Louisville, Ky.) had her shot go wide in the first minute. Then not long after that Sara Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) had her shot saved by the Eagles’ keeper. Macy Higdon (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and Kindsay Miller-Riney (Bardstown, Ky.) had their shots go wide and high respectively. But in the 22nd minute the Eagles got on the scoreboard first when Meredith Ury broke free with a spin move to put the Eagles up 1-0. Both teams would have their chances late in the first half as the keepers made key saves to keep the game 1-0 at half.

After the Patriots had eight shots (five on goal) miss in the first half they finally got a goal in the 49th minute off the foot of Macy Higdon who scored the goal directly from a corner kick to knot things up at 1-1. Both teams would trade shots until the 74th minute when an Eagles shot rebounded off the post directly to another Asbury player who then put it in the back of the net to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. The Patriots however had one last chance when Sara Herbert broke free from the Eagles’ defense and took a shot with less than 10 seconds on the clock.  The shot would’ve tied it, but the Eagles keeper made another key save that would preserve the victory for the Eagles 2-1.

Macy Higdon and Courtney Hagedorn (Highland Heights, Ky.) led the Patriots as they had two shots on goal. Courtney Anderson (Louisville, Ky.), Kindsay Miller-Riney, Sara Herbert and Hayley Greenwell (Frankfort, Ky.) each added one shot on goal. The Eagles outshot the Patriots 21-13. Jerrica Kidd, a freshman from Stanford, Ky., made her first collegiate start for the Patriots as she played all 90 minutes in goal and made seven saves.

The Patriots will be back in action on Saturday, September 13 as they will travel to the University of Pikeville at 6 PM.
