Men's Soccer makes it two in a row

The Patriot men’s soccer team (3-2, 0-0 MSC) made it two wins in a row on Thursday night as they defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College (0-3, 0-0 G-Mac) by a final score of 2-0.

Kentucky Wesleyan is an NCAA Division II school out of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Patriots got on the scoreboard first when junior Marvin Wesselburg (Essen, Germany) was taken down in the box, thus granting senior Ashley Woods (Manchester, England) a penalty kick. Woods put the penalty kick in the back of the net to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. The Panthers had numerous chances in the first half to tie the game, but senior goalkeeper CJ Powell (Louisville, Ky.) wouldn’t let it happen as he made three key saves to keep the lead for the Patriots 1-0 at halftime.

After intermission the Patriots picked up where they left in the first half as in the 55th minute Ashley Woods made a great cross through the box to a cutting Max Bristow (Exeter, England) who then put it in the back of the net to give the Patriots a 2-0 lead. The Panthers looked to cut into the 2-0 deficit in the 66th minute when they had a shot on goal, but CJ Powell made another key save to keep the lead at 2-0. The Patriots’ defense played another great game as they were able to preserve their second shutout in as many games.

Things got testy throughout the match as there was a total of five yellow cards handed out; two on the Patriots and three on the Panthers. But all in all it was a well-played game by both squads as the Patriots got the victory 2-0.

Ashley Woods found the back of the net for the second game in a row as he tallied a goal and also an assist. Max Bristow scored the other goal for the Patriots as he found the back of the net for the second time this season. Bradley Wilson (Lincoln, England) finished the game with two shots on goal, but wasn’t able to find the back of the net. CJ Powell played all 90 minutes in goal and came up with five big saves. Powell was able to preserve the shutout for the second game in a row for the Patriots. With the win Powell moves to 3-1 on the young season.

The Patriots will be back in action on Saturday, September 13 as they travel to Pikeville, Ky. to take on the University of Pikeville at 8 PM.
