Patriots “Bear" down on the Bears

Box Score

The Patriot volleyball team (14-4, 2-1 MSC) was able to “bear” down and earn a 3-0 sweep of the visiting Shawnee State University Bears (8-5, 1-2 MSC).

The Bears scored the first three points of the first set, but the Patriots battled back to score five of the next six to pull ahead 5-4. Then tied at 10 apiece the Patriots went ahead 11-10 on a kill by Shauna Stone (Bardstown, Ky.). The Patriots wouldn’t look back from there as they outscored the Bears 14-9 down the stretch to take the first set 25-19.

The second set was a mirror image of the first as the Bears took an early 6-2 lead on the Patriots. The Patriots were able to pull within one at 7-6, but the Bears would score the next five to take the lead 12-6. After being down 6-12, the Patriots would put the pesky Bears away for good in the second set as they outscored the Bears 19-6 en route to winning the second set 25-18.

The Patriots would take a commanding two sets to none lead into the third set. The third set started as the first two did: the Bears taking an early lead at 7-1. The Patriots would then score the next five to pull within one at 7-6. With the Patriots down 14-11 and the Bears looking to force a fourth set the Patriots needed someone to step up. That someone was Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) who connected on three kills as the Patriots scored seven straight to take an 18-14 lead. The Bears pulled within two at 23-21, but after a kill by Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) and an error on the Bears the Patriots took the third set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

The Patriot hitters were led by Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) and Cat Hall who each tallied nine kills. Jordan Strickland paced the Patriot setters with 31 assists. Strickland also hit .333 and added 13 digs. Jodie Klein (Louisville, Ky.) also pitched in adding 26 digs.

The volleyball team will be back in action Thursday night as they travel to the University of Pikeville at 7 PM.
