Women's soccer opens MSC play with win

     The Patriot women’s soccer (2-2-1, 1-0 MSC) team won the “Battle of the Patriots” in their Mid-South Conference opener against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) (0-6, 0-1 MSC) 3-1 on Wednesday.

     Defense controlled the game for most of the first half as neither team was able to find the back of the net. The match was scoreless until the 25th minute when senior Chelsey Landrum (Independence, Ky.) was able to find the back of the net to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. St Catharine would take the 1-0 lead into halftime.

     Things got off to a much quicker pace in the second half when in the 49th minute a Cumberlands’ mid-fielder was able to find the back of the net to tie the game 1-1. Not long after Cumberlands tied the game, the Patriots (SCC) took the lead back six seconds later when Macy Higdon (Elizabethtown, Ky.) found a cutting Courtney Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) who then found the back of the net to give her team the lead 2-1. The Patriots (SCC) weren’t done yet when in the 68th minute they had a shot that was deflected off the Cumberlands keeper and into the back of the net for an own goal. The goal in the 68th minute would secure the win for the Patriots (SCC) 3-1.

     The goals for Chelsey Landrum and Courtney Anderson gives them each two on the season. The Patriot (SCC) offense was led by Macy Higdon who had six shots and two on goal. The Patriots (SCC) also had four players get two shots on goal. The Patriots as a team outshot the Cumberlands 16-11. Jerrica Kidd (Stanford, Ky.) played all 90 minutes in goal and stopped six shots by the Patriots (UC).

     The women’s soccer team will be back in action on Saturday, September 20 when they travel to the University of Pikeville at 3 PM in a make-up game from September 13.
