Bulldogs bite the Patriots

The Patriot women’s soccer team (2-4-1, 1-1 MSC) lost a tough one to the visiting Union College Bulldogs (4-3, 0-2 AAC) on Tuesday night 3-1.  

The Bulldogs came out firing and had two shots in the first five minutes that were saved by the Patriots keeper, Emily Belt (Paducah, Ky.). The Bulldogs would strike first, when in the eighth minute Payten Walters found Kayla Langen who would finish with the goal to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Four minutes later, the Bulldogs struck again when Aline Dalmedico found the back of the net for her first goal of the game giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Dalmedico would strike again in the 29th minute off a pass from Kayla Langen to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead. The Patriots had their chances to cut into the lead late in the half, but failed to find the back of the net as the lead stood 3-0 in favor of the Bulldogs at halftime. 

The Patriots were able to find the back of the net in the 52nd minute when Macy Higdon (Elizabethtown, Ky.) made a cross to Courtney Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) who put it in the back of the net off her left foot from 20 yards out to cut the lead to 3-1. The Patriots had a chance to cut the lead to one in the 53rd minute, but Courtney Hagedorn (Highland Heights, Ky.) had her shot saved by the Bulldogs keeper. The Patriots had another chance in the 63rd minute when Macy Higdon also had her shot saved. The Patriots were unable to cut into the lead any further as they fell to the Bulldogs by a final score of 3-1.  

The Patriot offense was led by Macy Higdon who tallied three shots. The Patriots had three players tied with two shots apiece. The Patriots had seven corner kicks, but failed to find the back of the net. The Bulldogs out-shot the Patriots 11-9 for the match. Emily Belt and Jerrica Kidd (Stanford, Ky.) each played a half in goal for the Patriots and combined to stop five of the Bulldogs’ shots.  

The women’s soccer team will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lebanon, Tenn. to take on number four ranked nationally, Cumberland University at 1 PM.
