Patriots drop tough one on Senior Day

Box Score

The Patriot women’s soccer team (5-11-1, 1-6 MSC) dropped a tough one on Saturday against the Shawnee State University Bears (9-8, 4-3 MSC). The Bears played spoiler on the Patriots’ Senior Day as they got a goal in the second overtime to beat the Patriots 3-2.

The Bears looked to notch the scoreboard fist but Patriot goalkeeper, Emily Belt (Paducah, Ky.) denied the Bears. The Patriots got on the scoreboard first in the 17th minute when senior Paige Long (Ekron, Ky.) found Sara Herbert (Louisville, Ky.) who put it in the back of the net to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. Long was at it again in the 23rd minute; this time she scored the goal off of a pass from another senior, Chelsey Landrum (Independence, Ky.). The Patriot defense would hold for the rest of the half as they took a 2-0 lead into intermission.

The Bears would cut the lead to one in the 70th minute when Jenny Campbell broke free to cut the lead to 2-1. It looked as though the Patriots would come out with a 2-1 win on senior day, but the Bears denied the Patriots a victory when they tied the game at two apiece in the 86th minute. Neither team netted the go ahead goal in the final moments as both teams would head into a 10 minute sudden death overtime.

Neither team was able to create any offense in the opening overtime as they headed into a second overtime. However, things would change in the second overtime when Jenny Campbell struck again to give the Bears the 3-2 win.

The Patriots will now gear up for the Mid-South Conference Tournament where they will enter as the seventh seed. The Patriots will travel to Lebanon, Tenn. to take on the two seeded Cumberland University at 1 PM on Friday, November 7th in the Mid-South Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
