Patriot Women Split Pair of Warm-Up Games

The St. Catharine women’s basketball team has hit the court against intercollegiate opponents three times this season, using three different formats in the early going. After the “real” season opener at Midway College, a 64-57 Patriot loss, Lena Bramblett’s bunch took on NCAA D-I Austin Peay on Saturday in an exhibition and then hosted NCAA D-II foe West Virginia State on Tuesday.

So while the record shows an 0-1 slate for the Patriots, Bramblett feels the latter two games have gone a long way in getting her young team ready for a grueling Mid-South Conference schedule.

“We just didn’t finish at Midway and that comes from inexperience with so many freshmen,” said Bramblett. “But I saw improvement in the last two games.”

That improvement did not result in a win at Austin Peay where the Patriots absorbed a 92-45 setback. But, with a thrilling comeback, St. Catharine netted an 86-84 win over West Virginia State.

The Patriots managed only 25 percent from the field (15-61) in the loss to Austin Peay. Senior Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) led the scoring with 16 points but was the only patriot in double figures. Sandlin, a 5-5 guard, also paced the patriots on the boards as she and freshman Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) each corralled seven caroms.

For most of Tuesday’s scrimmage contest it looked like the results would be the same. Trailing for most of the game, and still down 11 points with six minutes to play, the Patriots embarked on a 19-6 run for the two point victory.

The comeback was culminated when Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) hit a trey with 35 seconds left to make the score 85-84. Sandlin followed that with a free throw for the final margin.

Kayla Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) led the scoring with 21 points while her twin sister Miranda added 18. They were joined in double figures by Sandlin and Moore who each had 12 points and Nikcoa Jackson (Louisville, Ky.) who tallied 11.

The Patriots get no rest as they return to action Wednesday with a regular season game at Milligan College (Tenn.). They open the conference schedule November 13th at Campbellsville University.
