Patriots Blank Bears 2-0 to Advance to Semifinals

Box Score

Three seniors played their final game ever at Barber Soccer Field on Saturday in the Mid-South Conference quarterfinals. And they made the most of that final appearance with a 2-0 win over Shawnee State.

Midfielder Kevin Owens (Elizabethtown, Ky.) played his usual solid game while his fellow seniors Ashley Woods (Manchester, England) and C.J. Powell (Louisville, Ky.) chipped in key contributions. Woods scored the Patriots’ first goal, his eighth game winning goal of the season and, in the goal, Powell recorded his seventh shutout of the season as St. Catharine improved to 14-5.

The win will move Tim Wolz’s team to the semifinal where they will meet Cumberland University. That game will be played Thursday at Campbellsville University starting at 8:00 pm.

Saturday’s victory was a dominating one for the Patriots who completely throttled the Shawnee State offense as the Bears (4-12-3) had only one real scoring opportunity but that shot went off the post in the 48th minute. Shawnee State had no shots on goal among their ten total shots. The Patriots had 11 shots with five of them on frame.

Woods opened the scoring in the 12 minute when he bent a free kick from 25 yards out past the Bear’s goal keeper. The score would remain 1-0 until the 44th minute when Marvin Wesselburg’s (Essen, Germany) corner kick was lofted perfectly in front of the goal where Harry Kirwan (Lincoln, England) finished it off for a 2-0 Patriot lead.

Thursday’s semifinal game will be a rematch for the Patriots against the Cumberland Bulldogs. Cumberland won the first game 3-2 in double overtime in Lebanon, Tennessee.
