Men's Basketball nets first win of the season

     The Patriot men’s basketball squad (1-4, 0-1 MSC) got their first win of the season last weekend at Cougar Classic. The tournament was played at the University of Saint Francis located in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Patriots fell to Davenport University in their first game on Friday, 87-61. With the opening round loss to Davenport, the Patriots were pit against Webber International University in the consolation game. The Patriots defeated the Warriors 100-79 to record their first win under first season head coach, Matt Taylor.

Davenport University

     The Patriots got 17 points from Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) and 11 points from Demetrus Richardson (Wilmington, Del.), but they couldn’t overcome a 24 point first half deficit as they fell 87-61.

     The opening half saw the game tied at 6-6, but the Panthers went on a 34-10 run to push their lead 40-16 with 3:47 remaining in the half. However, the Patriots answered, over the final 3:47 the Patriots went on a 17-2 run to cut the lead to nine at intermission (42-33).

     The second half belonged to the Panthers. After the Patriots cut the lead to single digits at half, the Panthers answered with an 18-7 run to push their lead back up to 20 at 60-40 with 12:08 remaining. The Panthers pushed their lead to as many as 30 in the second half as they defeated the Patriots 87-61.

Webber International University

     The Patriots were forced to play in the consolation against Webber International University after they fell in their opening game. The Patriots had five players’ notch double figures, led by Lorenzo Dewberry (Detroit, Mich.) and Brandon Bobb Jones who netted 19 and 18 respectively. The Patriot defense forced the Warriors into 22 turnovers on their way to a 100-79 victory.

     In the first half the Patriots trailed by five at 12-7 just four minutes into the game. The first half was a battle as there were nine ties in the opening frame, however, with 4:23 remaining in the half and the game tied at 33 apiece the Patriots went on a quick 8-2 run to take the six point lead into half.

     The Patriots would keep their foot on the gas in the opening moments in the second half as they pushed their lead to double figures at 45-35 with 18:31 remaining. The Patriots extended their lead to the largest of the game at 98-72 with 1:58 remaining. They went on to win the game 100-79.

Campbellsville University

     Fresh off their first win of the season, the Patriots traveled to Campbellsville, Ky. to battle MSC foe Campbellsville University. The Tigers entered the game ranked 19th in the NAIA boasting a record of 5-0. The Tigers ran their record to 6-0 after they defeated the Patriots 77-69. It was the opening conference game for both teams.

     The Patriots controlled the pace for the opening minutes as they held 19-12 lead with 12:09 remaining in the half. The Tigers battled back with an 11-4 run to tie the game at 24 apiece. Campbellsville seized the momentum as they took a 38-35 lead into the break.

     In the second half the Patriots battled back to tie the game at 46-46 with 14:17 remaining in the game. After the game was tied for the 13th time at 60-60 with 5:13, the Tigers seized the momentum and ended the game on a 17-9 run to win the game 77-69.

     Brandon Bobb Jones led the Patriots with 15 points and nine rebounds. Aishon White (Newark, N.J.) pitched in with 13 points. The Patriots struggled from the field as they shot 32% from the field (25-77). Not only did they struggle from the field, but also at the charity stripe where they shot 13-25, good enough for 52%.

     The Patriots will look to get back to the winning side of things this weekend when they travel to Kentucky State University on Saturday at 3 PM.
