Wrestling kicks off Season

The Patriot wrestling squad traveled the “Buckeye State” this past weekend for their first ever tournament as a program. The “Grappling Patriots” competed in the inaugural Case Western Reserve University Wrestling Festival on the campus of CWRU. The event consisted of two separate events – The Bob Del Rosa Duals and the Claude Sharer Classic.

“It was a great weekend for our guys to get their first taste of collegiate wrestling” noted head coach Spencer Adams. “I think the guys did better than we expected, everyone got a win. It was good for everyone to get their first win because our team is full of true freshman.”

One of those true freshman was Garrett Harding (Uhrichsville, Ohio). Harding led the Patriots with a 4-0 record. “If he [Harding] can keep up the hard work then he should be an All-American for us” noted Adams.

“Bernard and Gallo both wrestled very well, their loses were very close.” Bernard Ray, a freshman from Hodgenville, Ky., posted a 2-2 record in the Bob Del Rosa Duals. Ryan Gallo, another freshman from Mesa, Ariz., posted a 1-1 record in the duals.

Other individual results are listed below:
     • Ryan Gallo (149): 1-1
     • Mitch Rusch (157): 2-2
     • Bernard Ray (174): 2-2
     • BJ Carman (197): 2-2
     • Garrett Harding (285): 4-0

It also was a weekend of firsts for the Patriots as they begin their inaugural year. The first pin in the program’s history went to Mitch Rusch. The first win and the first takedown were recorded by Bernard Ray.

“We are just really young and it is going to take some time for us to gain some experience. We are just really inexperienced right now” said Adams.

The “Grappling Patriots” will return to the mats on Saturday, November 22 when they compete in the Campbellsville Duals at Campbellsville University.
