Women's Basketball drops two to ranked opponents

     The Patriot women’s basketball team (2-3, 0-1 MSC) dropped two tough games last weekend to formidable opponents. In their first game of the week the Patriots traveled to Campbellsville to battle the fifth ranked team in the nation, Campbellsville University. Then on Saturday the Patriots hosted the Martin Methodist Red Hawks. The Red Hawks came into the game receiving votes in the latest polls.

Campbellsville University

     The young Patriots were thrown into the fire when they traveled to Campbellsville University on Thursday, November 13. The Tigers (6-0, 1-0 MSC) came into the game ranked fifth in the nation in the latest polls. The Patriots trailed by just nine points at the break, but the Tigers outscored the Patriots 52-29 in the second half en route to a 94-62 victory.

     The Patriots trailed in the early moments, but after a pair of free throws by Jenna Thornhill (McQuady, Ky.) and a trey by Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) they only trailed by one. The Tigers went on a 19-8 run to extend their lead to 12 with 9:54 remaining in the half. The Patriots got as close at four in the opening frame, but were unable to mount a run to take the lead.

     The Tigers took a 42-33 lead into intermission. The Tigers blitzed the Patriots early in the second half with a 17-6 run to push their lead to 20 with 15:41 remaining. The Tigers followed that up with a 22-7 run to run their lead to its largest at 35. The Tigers dominated the second half en route to a 94-62 victory.

Martin Methodist

     The road didn’t get any easier for the Patriots. On short rest the Patriots returned home for a date with Martin Methodist (5-1). The Red Hawks came into the game receiving votes in the latest polls. The Patriots struggled from the three where they shot 2-19 (10.5%). Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Meyers, Fla.) came up big for the Patriots with 21 points and 11-11 from the charity stripe.

     The opening frame saw the two battle to a tie at 14 apiece. The Patriots then went on a 12-2 run to take a 10 point lead with 5:10 remaining. The Patriots continued to push the tempo as they took an eight point lead into the locker room.

     The Red Hawks came out of the break on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 36-36. The two continued to battle to a 53-53 tie. The Red Hawks embarked on a 14-3 run to take an 11 point lead with 4:54 remaining. The lead was too much for the Patriots to overcome as they fell 82-67.

     The Patriots will look to end their two game skid this Thursday when they host Pikeville (Ky.) at 6 p.m.
