Patriot Volleyball falls in MSC Semifinals

The Patriot volleyball team (29-11, 10-4) fell in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference Volleyball Tournament. The team won their opening match against Campbellsville University in the quarterfinals 3-1. The Patriots then had to take on rival Georgetown College. The Patriots won the first two sets against the Tigers, but couldn’t close as Georgetown won the final three sets to win the match 3-2.

Campbellsville University

The Patriots faced the host, Campbellsville University (9-28) in the tournament quarterfinals on Friday. The Patriots had no trouble with the Tigers in two meetings earlier in the season as they swept the Tigers in both meetings.

The opening set was a battle as neither was able to gain the early advantage. The Patriots trailed late in the set at 21-18, but fought back with a 5-2 run to tie the match at 23-23. After kills by Jordan Strickland (Lexington, Ky.) and Rebecca Just (Louisville, Ky.) the set belonged to the Patriots.

The Patriots grabbed the early lead at 5-3, but the Tigers doubled the Patriots up on an 8-4 run to take the lead at 11-9. The Patriots had the set tied a 22 apiece, but the Tigers battled back with a 3-1 run to win the set 25-23.

The Patriots dominated the third set doubling the Tigers up 10-5. The Tigers, however, fought back with an 8-1 run forcing Jason McDannold to call a timeout. With the set tied at 16 apiece, the Patriots seized the momentum with a 9-3 run to win the set 25-19.

The fourth set was just like the third where the Patriots dominated from the very beginning. This time the Patriots took an 11-5 lead to open the set. The Tigers got within four, but the Patriots dominated the set 25-16.

Georgetown College

After their 3-1 against Campbellsville in the quarterfinals, the Patriots were pit against rival Georgetown College (29-10) in the MSC semifinals. The Patriots dropped both matches against the Tigers earlier in the season, one in five sets and the other in three sets.

The opening set was a battle for both teams. With the set tied at 19 apiece, the Patriots took control of the set on a 5-0 run to take the lead 24-19. The Tigers battled back with a 3-0 run to pull within two, but Cat Hall (Louisville, Ky.) stepped up with a kill to give the Patriots the set 25-22.

The second set saw the Patriots take the early lead at 13-9 forcing the Tigers to call a timeout. The two then made their way to a tie at 23 apiece. The Patriots then got kills by Cat Hall and Casey Stone (Princeton, Ky.) to win the set 25-23. The Patriots took a two sets to none lead into the third set.

The third set was a different story than the first two. The set was a battle between the two as neither was able to take advantage. The Patriots held the lead at 16-15, but the Tigers came storming back with a 10-2 run to win the set 25-18.

The fourth set was a mirror image of the third set, the Patriots held the lead late but couldn’t close. The Patriots had the lead, 22-21, but the Tigers yet again came storming back on a 4-0 run to win the set 25-22.

The match headed to a crucial fifth set after being tied at 2-2. In the fifth set the Patriots fell behind 4-1. The Tigers then extended their lead to 10-6. The Patriots battled back to pull within two at 10-8, but the Tigers had an answer with a 5-1 run to win the set 15-9 and the match 3-2.

The volleyball team will now enter the offseason. Jason McDannold will have his hands full after he loses four seniors to graduation.
