Wrestling picks up first two wins in Program History

The wrestling squad picked up their first two wins in the program’s history over the weekend at the Campbellsville Duals at Campbellsville University.

The “Grappling Patriots” went 2-2 in four matches over the weekend. They defeated Truett-McConnell College 37-18 for their first ever win in program history. They followed that up with another win against Calumet College of St. Joseph, 26-15. The team fell to Indiana Tech University, 18-39 and against St. Andrews University they lost 9-38.

“It was a great weekend for our guys. We upset some teams who have been around for a while” noted head coach Spencer Adams. “Our guys came up with some big wins because we are forfeiting three weight classes, so our guys fought hard all weekend” said Adams. “Our team is full of true freshman, so to come out with a couple of wins was a huge confidence boost to our guys.”

Garrett Harding (Uhrichsville, Ohio) followed up a 4-0 performance at the Case Western Duals with a 3-0 record at Campbellsville. Harding is now 7-0 on the young season. Harding wasn’t the only one who came up big over the weekend. Bernard Ray (Hodgenville, Ky.) continued his hot streak posting another 4-0 record. Ray now moves to 8-0 on the season.

Ryan Gallo, a freshman from Mesa, Ariz., recorded a 2-2 record and had perhaps the biggest win over the weekend when he defeated the 11th ranked guy in the nation.

     Other individual results:
     • Ty Bennett (149): 2-2
     • Ryan Gallo (157): 2-2
     • Mitch Rusch (165): 2-2
     • Bernard Ray (174): 4-0
     • Brandon Breezley (184): 2-2
     • Brian Carman (197): 3-1
     • Matthew Daugherty (285): 0-1
     • Garrett Harding (285): 3-0

“Our guys are improving through each match. If we keep progressing then we should come out on top in some matches that we have already lost” added Adams.

The wrestlers will return to action on Saturday, December 6th when they travel to the “Hoosier State” to compete in the Indiana Little State Championships at Manchester University in Manchester, Ind.
