Patriot Men hang on for First Conference Win

     The Patriot men’s basketball team (3-8, 1-4 MSC) was back in action over the weekend against the Lindsey Wilson College Blue Raiders (6-6, 1-4 MSC). In a game that saw nine ties and 11 lead changes the Patriots hung on for an 86-83 victory.

     Ben Vozzola (Las Vegas, Nev.) poured in a game high 32 points. He also pitched in with nine rebounds for the game. Aishon White (Newark, N.J.) continued his hot streak with 24 points. Julito Hutchinson (Atlanta, Ga.) didn’t score much but he did pull down a career high 16 boards to help the Patriots win the rebounding battle, 57-44.

     After the Patriots trailed by four at 14-10, they went on a 15-4 run to take a seven point lead with 7:06 remaining in the half; Vozzola started the run with a pair of freebies and a pair of threes. The Blue Raiders answered back with a 9-3 run to cut the Patriot lead to one, 28-27. It looked as though the Patriots would trail heading into the locker room, but after a basket by Barry Smith (Birmingham, Ala.) the Patriots took a 36-35 lead into half.

     In the second half the Blue Raiders fought back to tie it for the seventh time with 16:42 remaining. The Patriots went on a 9-3 run to take a 47-41 lead with 13:13 left in the game. The Blue Raiders, however, outscored the Patriots 22-7 over the next seven minutes to take a nine point lead with seven minutes remaining. After a trey by Vozzola and a lay-up by White the lead was back down to four. After the Patriots trailed by four with 3:24 remaining, they ended the game on a 7-3 run to send the game into overtime.

     In OT the Patriots quickly took a four point lead after a pair of free throws by Vozzola and a bucket by White. Things looked good for the Patriots after they led by four with 13 seconds left, but the Blue Raiders quickly cut the lead to one with seven seconds remaining. After Vozzola sank a pair of freebies, the Patriots held a three point lead with six seconds left. The Blue Raiders made one last heave to send the game to a second OT, but it missed to left as the Patriots hung on for an 86-83 victory.

     The Patriots will face off against NCAA D-II foe, University of Illinois Springfield on Tuesday. Then on Friday the Patriots will host Indiana University Southeast at noon on Friday, December 12th.
