Patriots snap five game losing streak to the Grenadiers

Box Score

The Patriot men’s basketball team (4-8) picked up their second win in a row after defeating Indiana University Southeast 76-70. The win was extra sweet for the Patriots as they snapped a five game losing to the Grenadiers in a game that saw 10 ties and 10 lead changes.

St. Catharine survived a big night from Jake Simpson, who scored 27 points in the losing effort. Aishon White (Newark, N.J.) led the Patriots with 19 points. White came on strong late scoring 17 of his 19 in the final twenty minutes. Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) and Ben Vozzola (Las Vegas, Nev.) pitched in with 17 and 13 points, respectively.

Both teams started out cold in the opening minutes as they combined to shoot 2-12 in the opening four minutes and change. After the Patriots took an 8-6 with 14:12 left, the Grenadiers went on an 11-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 17-8. St. Catharine, however, fought back to cut the lead to four after a triple by Ben Vozzola. The Patriots trailed by seven with six minutes remaining, but went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 24 apiece. After a pair of Vozzola freebies, the Patriots took a 33-31 lead into the locker room.

Vozzola’s streaky shooting continued into the second half when he opened the half with a three to give the Patriots a five point lead. The Grenadiers fought back and took a six point lead with 11:01 left, but the Patriots came storming back with a 16-4 run highlighted by a pair of breakaway dunks by Aishon White and Barry Smith. White led the Patriots with 11 points over the 16-4 run. The Grenadiers tied the game, 65-65, with 3:09 remaining, but after a deuce and a trey by Jones the Patriots took a five point lead. IU Southeast cut the lead to two, but after a crossover step back jumper by White, the Patriots sealed the deal with a 76-70 victory over the Grenadiers.

The team will now receive a much needed break for the holidays, but will return soon after for a date with Cardinal Stritch University on December 29th at 1 PM.
