Patriot Women fall to the Knights

     The Patriot women’s basketball squad (5-9) fought an uphill battle on Tuesday night against the Marian University Knights (11-1). Marian entered the game ranked #12 in the NAIA D-II. The Patriot women had the lead down to five late in the second half, but couldn’t match the high-scoring Knights’ offense as they fell, 87-70.

     The Patriots had two players score in double figures led by Sasha Ruiz-Lopez who scored a game-high 21 points. Heather Sandlin pitched in with 11 points. Sandlin led the Patriots in rebounding with eight. The Knights couldn’t miss all night as they shot 58 percent from the field including 46 percent from long range. The Patriots on the other hand could only muster up 40 percent from the field and 33 percent from the three.

     Both teams got off to a slow start to begin the game as both teams combined for nine missed field goals and seven turnovers in the opening five minutes. Marian, however, found the touch as they built a 12 point lead, 25-13, 7:05 left in the half. The Patriots didn’t fold as they answered with a 10-4 run capped off by a deep three by Stacie Shrout. St. Catharine looked to be in good shape when they only trailed by eight with 2:07 left in the half, but the visiting Knights went on a 9-2 run over the final 2:07 to take a 44-29 lead into the break.

     After Marian hit a three to open the second frame the lead swelled to 17. The Patriots answered with back-to-back triples by Sandlin and Kayla Wilson to cut the lead down to 11. After Marian held a comfortable 52-41 advantage, St. Catharine went on a quick 6-0 run to cut the lead to five with 13:52 left. The Knights came roaring back with a 17-3 run to take a commanding 19 point lead, 69-50, with 7:42 remaining. St. Catharine never got any closer than 15 down the stretch as the Knights walked away with 87-70 victory.

     Lena Bramblett’s squad will now get a much needed break for the holidays, but will return on December 26th for a trip to the “Sunshine State” to take on Ave Maria University on December 29th and 30th.
