Bulldogs Bite Back in Beating Patriots

     What a difference two days makes. After winning 88-84 at home Saturday against Tennessee Wesleyan, St. Catharine traveled to the Bulldogs’ house Monday and limped away with an 87-69 setback.

     Tennessee Wesleyan (7-8) scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed as the Patriots fell to 5-10 on the season. The Bulldogs led by as many as 10 points in the first half before settling for a 44-37 lead at intermission.

     Emory Bennett (Miami, Fla.) opened the second half with a bucket to cut the advantage to five points but the Bulldogs scored the next 14 points to lead 58-39 with 13 minutes to play. Julito Hutchinson (Atlanta, Ga.) ended a six minute Patriots’ scoring drought with a jumper at the 12:56 mark but St. Catharine never got the lead under double digits the remainder of the game.

     The Patriots shot just 33 percent from the field while the Bulldogs shot a torrid 56 percent including 6-16 (37.5 percent from three point range. St. Catharine did hold a 40-35 rebounding edge as Hutchinson led the way with nine boards.

     Lorenzo Dewberry (Detroit, Mich.) had 19 points off the bench to lead St. Catharine. Bennett and Kahlil Murphy (Willingboro, N.J.) added 13 points each.

     St. Catharine returns to Mid-South Conference play Saturday when they host Life University in a 4:00 tip-off. The Running Eagles, (9-5, 3-1) were ranked 28th in the latest NAIA poll.
