Patriots bite the Bulldogs

     Lena Bramblett’s squad made it two in a row over the weekend when they picked up a win on the road against Wilberforce College. The Patriots (7-11) made a late second half surge to take down the Bulldogs (2-19), 62-58.

     Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) led the Patriots with 18 points to go along with nine rebounds and seven assists. Brooke Gee (Ashland, Ky.) also turned in a strong performance pouring in a season high 17 points. Kayla Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) pulled down 11 rebounds to help the Patriots win the rebounding battle, 43-41.

     The Patriots trailed by as many six in the opening minutes of the first half, but fought back to tie the game at 16 apiece. After the game was tied for a second time, 18-18, the Patriots used a 6-0 run to take a six point advantage. St. Catharine took a 28-24 lead into the locker room.

     In the second half, the home team used a 10-1 run to take a nine point advantage with 13:14 remaining. The Patriots, however, battled back to pull within one after going on a 9-1 run. The remaining minutes of the game was a seesaw battle, but the Patriots went on a 7-3 run to end the game to come away with a 62-58 victory.

     Neither team shot a good percentage for the game. St. Catharine shot just 40 percent, whereas Wilberforce shot 32 percent from the field. The cold spell spilled over to the charity strip, where the Patriots shot 65 percent and the Bulldogs shot 45 percent.

     The Patriots will return to conference action this week when they travel to Shawnee State followed by another MSC game against Georgetown on Saturday.
