Women's Basketball upsets #12 Shawnee State, 68-59

The Patriot women’s basketball team (8-11, 1-5 MSC) picked up their biggest win of the season on Thursday night when they went on the road and upset #12 Shawnee State University, 68-59. Not only was a big win, but it was their first Mid-South Conference win of the season.

“It was an awesome game to watch, our execution was phenomenal,” stated head coach Lena Bramblett. “Everyone played well and we had different people step up. It was just a great game to be a part of.”

Brooke Gee (Ashland, Ky.) had a career night pouring in a career-high 20 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) and Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) tallied 15 and 12 points, respectively. Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) had six points and dished out eight assists.

The Patriots bolted to a 7-0 lead to start the game and never trailed. The Bears (17-4, 4-2), however, didn’t go into hibernation and fought back, eventually tying the game at 50-50 with 8:51 remaining. But Wilson then canned a jumper and Gee converted a three-point play and then scored inside. Moore then completed the SC ten point run with a bucket and the lead never went below five points again.

A tenacious Patriot defense held the Bears to 37 percent shooting from the field which included an 11 percent (2-18) performance from three-point range. St. Catharine shot 46 percent overall and 50 percent (7-14) from behind the arc.

Another ranked opponent now looms for Bramblett’s bunch as they travel to # 25 Georgetown on Saturday for a 2:00 tip-off.
