Tigers scratch the Patriots

Box Score

The Patriot men’s basketball team (6-12, 2-6 MSC) was on the road this weekend against Mid-South foe, Georgetown College. The Tigers (18-4, 7-2 MSC) came into the game ranked 17th in the latest polls and for good reason as they beat the Patriots 72-55.

The Patriots couldn’t match the Tigers’ balanced scoring attack as they only had two players score in double figures. Ben Vozzola (Las Vegas, Nev.) led the way with 18 points to go along with six boards. Brandon Bobb Jones (Wilmington, Del.) was the only other Patriot in double figures with 11 points. The Tigers dominated the glass winning the rebounding battle, 43-33.

The Patriots got off to a quick start after a three by Vozzola and a layup by Emory Bennett (Miami, Fla.) the Patriots were out to a 5-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. The lead didn’t last long, after the Patriots held a three point lead, 11-8, the Tigers went on a 20-5 run to take a 12 point advantage with 4:06 remaining in the half. The Tigers led by as many as 17 in the final 4:06 as they took a 41-27 lead into the break.

In the final 20 minutes the Patriots got the lead down to single digits for most of the second half, but never got the lead below six. With five minutes remaining the Patriots had the lead down to six, but the Tigers answered with a 12-1 run to take a 70-53 lead. The Patriots ended up falling by a final score of 72-55.

The Patriots had a day to forget as they shot just 33 percent from the field including just 23 percent (5-21) from three. The Tigers shot 43 percent from the field, but like the Patriots they too struggled from long range shooting just 16 percent.

The Patriots are on the road again this Thursday when they travel to Life University at 7:30. The Patriot defeated the Running Eagles in dramatic fashion earlier this month on a last second tip-in at the buzzer.
