Bat Pats Take Down #14 Blazers

St. Catharine College (2-3) scored a run in the top of the ninth and beat the 14th ranked Belhaven University Blazers 4-3 Monday night. The Patriots used 9 arms and 9 base knocks to shutdown the high scoring Blazers.

Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) singled to start the 9th and was replaced by Lamont Calloway (Louisville, KY).  A balk moved Calloway to second and Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) had a bunt single to put runners on the corners. A wild pitch plated Calloway for his second run of the game and the game winner.

The Pats jumped on top in the 3rd inning when Bohorquez tripled and scored on a Josh Wenning (Palmyra, IN) ground out.  St. Catharine tacked on 2 more runs in the 4th inning to go up 3-0.  Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) singled and scored on a Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, KY) bloop single.  After a walk and a HBP, Bohorquez was hit by a pitch to score pinch runner Calloway.

Belhaven (6-2) scored 3 runs in the top of the 7th on 2 HBP, a hit and 2 Patriot errors to knot the game at 3 apiece.

The Patriot pitching staff held the high scoring Blazer offense to just 4 hits and 9 different arms toed the rubber.  Freshman Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, KY) started and tossed a scoreless frame with 2 K's. Sophomore Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, NY) threw up a zero, with a hit, BB and K.  Freshman Nathan Getzin (Louisville, KY) pitched a perfect frame and freshman James Davenport (Louisville, KY) had a K and hit in his scoreless half.  Sophomores Dylan Manley (Frankfort, KY) had a 7 pitch scoreless inning and Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, KY) had a 6 pitch scoreless half.

Patriot junior Omar Hernandez (Fresno, CA) ran into trouble in the 7th.  He hit 2 batters and gave up a single before a 2-out error plated 2 Belhaven runs.  Freshman Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, CA) came in and tossed 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.  Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) picked up his first save of the year with a perfect 9th to seal the win.

Bohorquez led the Patriots with a 2-4 day with a triple, a run, a stolen base and a RBI.  Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, CA) added a 2-4 day.  Five other Patriots recorded base knocks.
