Box Score

After losing two in a row and four out of their last five Lena Bramblett’s team was in desperate need of a win. Her team got just that when they hosted Wilberforce (Ohio) on Monday night, 76-65. The Patriots picked up their 10th win to move to 10-15 overall. It was the first time since the 2012-13 season that her team reached the plateau of double digit wins.

The Patriots used balanced scoring with four players reaching double figures. Miranda Wilson (Corbin, Ky.) and Sasha Ruiz-Lopez (Ft. Myers, Fla) provided a spark off the bench for the Patriots scoring 14 and 10 points, respectively. Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) continued her strong play with 12 points. Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) pitched in with 11 points on the night.

After falling behind by two in the early going the Patriots scored six unanswered to pull ahead 6-2 just three minutes into the game. The next ten minutes and change was a seesaw battle that saw both teams hold the lead until the Bulldogs went ahead by one, 21-20. After a pair of baskets by Wilson and a three point play by Sandlin, the Patriots jumped out to a six point lead with 5:36 remaining in the half. It looked as though the teams were headed for a tie at halftime, but an old fashioned three point play by Wilson gave the Patriots a three point lead, 39-36, heading into the locker room.

St. Catharine opened the final 20 minutes with a 6-0 run to push their lead to its largest of the game, 45-36. The Bulldogs cut the lead to three with 11:44 remaining, but the home team answered with an 11-4 run to extend their lead back out to ten, 61-51, with 6:46 remaining in regulation. The Bulldogs made it interesting late cutting the lead to six on two separate occasions, but the Patriots clamped down on defense to pick up the 76-65 win.

Neither team shot the ball exceptionally well. St. Catharine shot 36 percent (23-63) from the field and Wilberforce shot just 35 percent (28-80) for the game. The Patriots connected on five of their 13 three point attempts and the Bulldogs hit just three of their 13 attempts.

The Patriots will return to conference action this week. On Thursday they travel to Williamsburg, Ky. to battle the Cumberlands (Ky.). Then on Saturday they travel to Pikeville, Ky. to battle the Pikeville Bears.
