Baseball Splits with Talladega

After cancelling their home opening weekend series, the Patriots (3-4) headed south to warmer weather and split at Talladega College (3-7), winning 16-3 and losing the nightcap 12-3. The Tornadoes are receiving votes in the NAIA pre-season poll and the Patriots move to 2-1 against teams ranked or receiving votes.

The Patriots jumped on the board early and often Saturday, racing to an 8-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th inning. John Werner (Anaheim, CA) had another quality start for the Patriots, going 5 innings and striking out 8. He allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and picked up his first win of the year.  Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, CA) tossed the final 2 frames and allowed a run on a fielders choice.

After the strong 8-2 lead, the Pats tacked on 8 runs in the 6th to put the opener out of reach.  SC banged out a season high 14 hits with Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) leading the way, going 3-4 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs.  Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) went 2-3 with a double, 3 runs and 3 RBI's.  Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) went 2-3 with 2 RBI's and reached base 4 times and Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, KY) added a 2-4 day with a triple, 3 runs and a RBI.  Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) added a 2-5 game with a run and 3 RBI's, while Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, CA) went 2-5 with 2 RBI's.

As good as the Patriots were in the opener, the opposite showed up in the nightcap.  SC starter Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) gave up an early 2-0 Tornadoes lead in the 1st inning on a Hector Corona opposite field homer. The Patriots answered back with a 3 spot in the top of the 2nd, with a solo homerun by Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) and a Tyler Steiner (Coral Glades, FL) double that plated 2 runs.

Talladega scored 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 4th and never looked back.  Borkowski was saddled with the loss, pitching 4 innings and allowing 5 runs (1 earned) 3 hits.  Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, CA) surrendered 3 runs on 3 hits in a inning of work and Jake McCoy (Mesa, AZ) allowed 4 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits. 

After 6 hits in the first 3 innings, the Patriot bats went silent. Gonzalez led the way for the Bat Pats with a 2-2 game, scoring a run with a double.  Steiner went 1-3 with a 2 RBI double and Diaz went 2-4 with the solo shot.  Rosso went 1-2 with a HBP and Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) went 1-3 with a run.

The Patriots hope to open at home this weekend - weather permitting.
