Tigers Claw Patriot Women, 69-52

     The Patriot women’s basketball team (10-19, 1-12 MSC) hosted rival Georgetown College last night for homecoming. The Patriots were within five in the second half, but the Tigers (14-10, 5-8 MSC) clawed back to win 69-52.

     Heather Sandlin (Florence, Ky.) led the way with 15 points. Sandlin also pulled down seven rebounds to go with six assists. Jenna Thornhill (McQuady, Ky.) pitched in with 12 points while Brooke Gee (Ashland, Ky.) added 10 points. Gee pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, but it was the Tigers who won the rebounding battle, 37-32.

     Georgetown stole the show early after jumping out to a 4-0 lead, but after a layup by Gee and a triple by Sandlin the Patriots held their first lead four minutes in. After Thornhill connected on a jumper the lead was down to five, 19-14, but the Tigers responded with six unanswered with 8:25 remaining in the opening frame. Georgetown led by as many as 13 over the final eight minutes and change as they took a 39-28 lead into the locker room.

     The Patriots began to heat up over the opening minutes of the final frame. St. Catharine opened the second half on a 9-4 run to pull within six, 43-37, with 14:07 remaining. Sandlin connected on a three point play to cut the lead down to five, 45-40. But the Tigers responded with a resounding 20-5 run to take a commanding 20 point lead with 4:09 remaining. The Patriots never got any closer than 15 over the final four minutes and change as they fell by a final of 69-52.

     The Patriots struggled from the field shooting just 29 percent (16-56) for the game and just 19 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Tigers on the other hand couldn’t miss as they connected on 28 of their 54 attempts, good enough for 52 percent.

     The Patriots will return to action on Saturday when they host #19 Shawnee State at 2 PM. The Patriots upset the then ranked 12th Bears on January 22, 68-59. St. Catharine will also honor Heather Sandlin and Stacie Shrout for senior day festivities.
