Patriots fall to Shawnee State on Senior Day

     It was a bittersweet day for two Patriot women’s basketball seniors on Saturday when they played their final home game of their collegiate career. Heather Sandlin and Stacie Shrout both Florence, Ky. natives played the final home game for the Patriots. It was Shawnee State who came in and spoiled senior day winning 66-43.

     It was Cora Moore (Louisville, Ky.) who was the only Patriot in double figures with 12 points. Moore connected on half of her three point opportunities, hitting three in six attempts. The Bears won the battle on the glass by 10, 41-31.

     Both teams got off to a slow start as both teams were tied at six apiece five minutes in. The Bears (21-9, 8-6 MSC) then went on a 9-3 run to take a six point advantage with eight minutes and change remaining in the half. The Patriots answered with back-to-back 3’s by Moore and Mackenzie Myers (Taylorsville, Ky.) to pull within two, 17-15. The Patriots never could get the lead below two in the final minutes of the first half as they went in the locker room trailing 28-23.

     Over the first eight minutes and change in the second half the Bears went on a 25-2 run to extend their lead out to 18, 48-30. After a trey by Moore the lead was down to 14, 50-36, with just over nine minutes remaining. Over the final nine minutes the Patriots never got any closer than 14 as they fell to the Bears, 66-43.

     The Patriots (10-20, 1-13 MSC) shot just 25 percent (14-57) for the game, whereas the Bears shot 46 percent (22-48). The other difference in the game was at the charity stripe where the Patriots connected on all nine of their attempts, but the Bears shot 29 while hitting 19.

     The Patriots will gear up for the Mid-South Conference Tournament this week in Frankfort, Ky.
