Patriots Hold on to Win Home Opener

The Patriots finally played a home game and held on for a 6-5 win over Brescia University. St. Catharine (7-6) led 6-2 heading into the 9th and the Bearcats rallied for 3 runs in the 9th before back to back fly ball outs ended the threat.

The Patriots used 10 arms with James Davenport (Louisville, KY) picking up the win with his inning of work. He had a 9 pitch inning and recorded a K. Conner Lindsay (Nicholasville, KY) started and gave up a run on 2 hits in his inning of work. Austin Willis-Greene (Manhattan, NY) tossed a scoreless 2nd frame and allowed the Patriots to knot the Bearcat lead. Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) singled and scored on a Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) 2 out single.

Alex Knowles (Huntington Beach, CA) tossed a scoreless 3rd and the Patriots took the lead for good. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) doubled and Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) walked and Guevara was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, CA) singled home both Bohorquez and Diaz.

Derek Jones (Mt. Washington, KY) tossed the 4th and allowed a run on 1 hit to cut into the Patriot lead. The Pats got the run back when Cespedes doubled and scored on a Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) sac fly. Nathan Getzin (Louisville, KY) tossed a scoreless 5th and the Patriots added to their lead when Guevara singled and later scored on a Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, KY) sac fly.

Dylan Manley (Frankfort, KY) pitched out of a jam in the 6th, allowing no runs in his inning of work. Davenport tossed a scoreless 7th followed by another scoreless frame by Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, CA). The Pats scored their final run in the 7th off a error allowing Diaz to reach base and a error allowing Diaz to reach 3rd after a stolen base - with Santiago driving him in with a sac fly.

Omar Hernandez (Fresno, CA) started the 9th and gave up 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk.  Daniel Lerma (Oxnard, CA) came in with runners at 1st and 2nd and recorded two 1st pitch fly outs to end the game and pick up his first save on the year.

The Patriots were led by Arce, going 1-1 with 3 RBI's. Guevara went 2-3 with 2 runs and Bohorquez added a 2-3 game with double and a run. Cespedes went 2-4 with a double, RBI and a run.

St. Catharine opens Mid-South Conference play this weekend when they host Shawnee State University.
