The Patriot wrestling team recently added another commitment for the 2015-16 season. TJ Edwards, a senior from James Clemens High School in Madison, Ala., recently gave his commitment to join the St. Catharine College Wrestling program next season.

Edwards began his varsity wrestling career at Sparkman High School in Harvest, Ala. as an eighth grader at 140 pounds. In his freshman and sophomore seasons he qualified for the state tournament, posting a 54-10 record in his sophomore year. After his sophomore year at Sparkman, TJ and his family moved to Madison, Ala.

He was destined to make a run at the state title in his junior year, but after suffering a shoulder injury two weeks prior to the state tournament he was forced to sit out. Edwards would bounce back posting a second place finish in the 170 division in a Regional Super 32 Qualifier. In his senior year, Edwards posted a 50-3 record en route to winning the Alabama Class 7A Championship in the 182 pound division.

As a freshman at Sparkman, TJ was voted by the coaches at the most valuable wrestler. Then in his sophomore season, he was named a team captain. He continued to hold that honor for his junior and senior year at James Clemens.

Edwards spoke of his excitement saying, “I am convinced that Coach Adams can help me achieve my personal wrestling goal of becoming an All-American. More importantly, I want to be on a National Championship wrestling team and with the wrestlers I’ve already met and the ones I heard are also signing at St. Catharine, I feel pretty good about our chances.” When asked what he liked the most about St. Catharine, Edwards responded, “One of the things I really liked was the dining center, the food is great. The dorms are very nice, the classes are small and not far from the dorms.”

TJ’s dad also had some nice things to say about the school, “What I liked the most was the small class size and the location of the campus. I was very impressed with the admissions staff and have spoken to them often. I was also impressed with the coaching staff and staying in constant communication in terms of TJ’s progress on the mat.” His dad is also looking into the future saying, “I am looking forward to getting to know the coaching staff and the faculty as well as we become part of the Patriot family.”

Not only is TJ an excellent wrestler, but he is also a phenomenal student in the classroom. He carries a 3.55 GPA and he recently scored a 27 on the ACT. Head Coach of the Patriots, Spencer Adams, “TJ is an extremely hard worker and has improved drastically just over the past five months since his initial visit on campus. I believe that he will make a great college wrestler. Not only will he provide a great value to our program on the mat, but he also has great grades with a 3.55 GPA and a 27 on his ACT.”

Coach Adams also noted that he expects TJ to wrestle in either the 184 or 197 weight class. Edwards will join the “Grappling Patriots” in August to begin preparation for the fall semester.
