Bat Pats Sweep the Bears in MSC Opener

Mother nature forced the Patriots to push back the start of the Mid-South Conference slate, but the Pats won two games, (5-2 and 7-0) Sunday to start off MSC play on the right side. Solid pitching and timely hitting was the recipe for St. Catharine (9-6, 2-0 MSC) in todays sweep of Shawnee State University (4-11, 0-2 MSC).

SC 5 - SSU 2
John Werner (Anaheim, CA) tossed his fifth quality start in as many outings, tossing 8.1 innings to move to (4-1) on the year.  Werner scattered 6 hits, gave up 2 runs (1 earned) and punched out 12 Bears. Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, CA) tossed the final two outs to pick up his first save on the year.

The Patriots were led by Dominique Guevara's (Oxnard, CA) bases loaded double in the 8th inning to bust the game open. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN) went 2-4 with a double and Alfredo Bohorquez (Maraciabo, Venezuela) went 2-3 with 2 runs. Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) went 1-4 with 2 RBI's and Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, CA) added a RBI base knock.

SC 7 - SSU 0
Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) hurled a complete game shutout to sweep the day and win the opening MSC series. He scattered 6 hits and fanned 4 Bears and walked 0.

At the plate, the Patriots had 6 hits, but were aided by 6 free bases and took advantage of them. SC scored 6 runs off starter Cody Strayer in the first two innings. Santiago Arce doubled home 2 runs in the bottom of the first and Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) singled home 2 runs in the 4 run second inning. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) doubled home the final run for the Patriots. Arce went 2-3 with 2 RBI's, Kissel added a 1-3 game and Marc Mason (Tehama, CA) went 1-2 with a run. Bohorquez walked 3 times and scored 2 runs.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow with a single 9 inning game at 1:00.
