Women's Golf opens in the “Sunshine State"

The Patriot women’s golf team started their spring season with a bang when they recently traveled to St. Augustine, Fla. The team was in action at the Georgetown College Women’s Invitational held at the World Golf Slammer & Squire Golf Course.

All four of the girls who made the trip to Florida earned a spot on the All-Tournament team. Three out of the four finished in the top five, while the other finished one spot out of the top five in sixth place.

Brianna Cornett (Danville, Ky.) scored a second place finish in the event. Cornett shot a 101 in the opening round, but recovered and found her swing in the second round shooting a 95. The winner in the event finished with a two-round total 175.

Not to be outdone by her teammate, Ashley McKenty (Benton, Ky.), also had a strong showing. McKenty finished with a two day total of 200 (105-95). McKenty, like Cornett, seemed to find a groove in the second round shooting ten shots better than she did in the first round. McKenty’s performance earned her a third place finish.

Taylor Ritchie (Winchester, Ky.) improved as the tournament went on. Ritchie shot a 103 in the opening round, but recovered with a 98 in the final round. Ritchie finished the tournament in fourth place.

Drew Ison (Winchester, Ky.) also had a strong showing at St. Augustine. Ison shot a 103 in the first round, but struggled in the second round shooting a 106. Ison earned a sixth place finish with her performance.

Head Coach, Joan Rizer, was elated by her team’s performance saying, “I am so proud of all the girls, they have been working really hard and it’s starting to show. It was the first time that all the girls made All-Tournament team, which is an awesome achievement.”

As a team the Patriots finished in second place. They finished the first frame with a 412, but recovered with a 394 in final round. The Patriots finished just two strokes behind Mid-South Conference foe, Georgetown College, who was the winner of the event finishing with an 804 over the two days.

The team will have a chance to fine tune their swings before the Mid-South Conference Spring Invitational on March 30-31. The tournament will be held at StoneCrest Golf Course located in Prestonsburg, Ky.
