Softball records second straight split at UPIKE

     For the second day in a row the Patriot softball team (11-21, 5-10 MSC) was in action at Pikeville (Ky.). The two teams split a doubleheader yesterday, the same result happened today with the Patriots taking the opener 4-2, but the Bears (15-15, 7-11 MSC) fought back to win the nightcap 6-1. Holly Smith’s squad will return to action this Wednesday when they hosts NAIA power Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. ET.

     The Patriots were able to get seven solid innings out of Krystal Cammuse (Frankfort, Ky.) in the opening game. Cammuse (5-9) went the full seven innings while allowing three hits and three runs, with none of those earned. She also struck out six and walked two in her seven innings of work.

     After Pikeville got on the scoreboard first in the fourth, the Patriots would battle back and get one in the fifth to tie the game. The Patriots would strike again in the seventh this time with three runs to take a 4-1 lead. The Bears made it interesting late with one in the bottom of the seventh, but the Patriot defense stood strong and came away with a 4-2 win.

     Cammuse also had a solid day at the plate going 2-4 with a two run single in the seventh inning. Brandi Hood (Bardstown, Ky.) and Katie Hansgen (Louisville, Ky.) each picked up a pair of hits and scored two and one runs, respectively. Kelsey Gravens (Mt. Washington, Ky.) and Carly Benz (Louisville, Ky.) each tallied a hit and an RBI in the win.

     St. Catharine was less fortunate in the nightcap as they dropped a 6-1 decision. The Bears were able to take advantage of six Patriot errors in the win. The Patriot bats again went silent as they only tallied three hits to the Bears nine.

     The Patriots got on the scoreboard first in the opening inning. Tiffany Wickline (Georgetown, Ky.) led off the inning with a double to left, three batters later Cammuse drove in Wickline for the first run of the game. That would be the only lead for the Patriots as the Bears fought back with one in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to come up with the final score of 6-1.

     Tiffany Wickline (4-11) started the game for the Patriots and lasted three innings. She surrendered six runs, with only three of those earned, on eight hits. Brittany McKee (Somerset, Ky.) pitched two innings and surrendered no hits to the Bears. Meghan Wolford (Louisville, Ky.) pitched the seventh inning and allowed just one hit. Wickline, Cammuse, and Hood were the only Patriots to record a hits in the game.
