Patriots Outlast Blue Raiders in Opener

In matchup of the top two arms in the Mid-South Conference, the bats stole the show. The Patriots (27-11, 12-3 MSC) outlasted Lindsey Wilson College 14-12 in a wild game in the series opener.

The Patriots jumped on starter Ryan Hartman, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first on 5 hits, the big hit a 2 RBI double by Tyler Devine (Harrodsburg, KY). The Blue Raiders answered with a 2 run homer by Aaron Ashton, breaking a 35 inning scoreless inning streak by starter John Werner (Anaheim, CA).

Lindsey Wilson tied the game in the bottom of the second, but the Bat Pats would plate 4 runs in the top of the third to regain the lead. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, DR) had a 2 RBI single in the frame. LWC would answer back with a Alex Bautista 2 run shot over the left field fence. The score remained the same until another 2 run homer by Bautista tied the game in the 5th.

The Patriots would answer back with 2 runs in the top of the 6th when Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, CA) and scored on a sac fly by Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, IN). Josh Wenning (Palmyra, IN) singled in the inning a later scored on a error.

LWC knotted the game at 9 with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th on a single and an error. SC answered right back with 2 runs in the top of the 8th to regain the lead. A bases loaded walk by Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, CA) and a RBI single by Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) scored both runs.

Werner tossed a scoreless 8th and the Patriots would tack on 3 more runs in the top of the 9th, the big hit a 2 RBI triple by Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela). Werner tossed 8 innings to pick up the win and move to 9-1 on the year. He allowed 9 runs (8 earned) on 9 hits and 4 walks, punching out 8.

James Davenport (Louisville, KY) started the 9th and allowed 3 runs (1 earned) on 2 hits and 2 walks. After a 30 minute light malfunction, Steven Borkowski (San Diego, CA) picked up the save, striking out the final batter to end the Blue Raider rally.

Francisco Gonzalez led the Patriots at the plate going 4-6 with 2 runs and an RBI. Dominique Guevara went 3-5 with 2 runs and 3 RBI's and Alfredo Bohorquez went 3-6 with a double, triple, 3 runs and 2 RBI's. Tyler Devine went 2-4 with 2 doubles, a run and 2 RBI's. Josh Wenning and Harold Diaz (Gurabo, PR) both had 2 hit games.

The Patriots are back at Lindsey Wilson today for a DH starting at 2:00 ET.
