Patriots survive and advance against UPIKE

Once postseason tournaments begin it’s all about survive and advance and the Patriot Baseball team (35-14) did just that tonight against Pikeville (Ky.) in the semifinals of the consolation bracket in the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament at Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Ky.

The Patriots were able to scratch out an 8-4 victory over the Bears (17-28) to advance to the finals of the consolation bracket tomorrow against Cumberland (Tenn.) at 2 p.m. ET.

St. Catharine used five different arms to come away with the victory. Nathan Getzin (Louisville, Ky.) started the game for the Patriots allowing two runs – one earned – on four hits in his 2.1 innings of work. Getzin then gave way to Austin Willis-Greene (Beaufort, S.C.) with one out in the fifth. Willis-Greene lasted two innings allowing two runs on four hits.

Tyler Jones (Huntington Beach, Calif.) picked up the win for the Patriots. Jones (2-2) lasted 1.1 innings allowing just one hit. James Davenport (Louisville, Ky.) allowed just one hit in his 1.1 innings of work.

Davenport gave way to Steven Borkowski (San Diego, Calif.) in the eighth. Borkowski – who picked up the save in two innings of work earlier today against Campbellsville (Ky.) – picked up his second save of the day after throwing the final two innings against the Bears.

The Bears jumped on Getzin in the early going with runs in the second and third inning. Pikeville extended their lead out to 4-0 after a two-run home run in the top half of the fifth.

The Bat Pats finally came alive with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to take a 5-4 lead. Drew Kissel (Jeffersonville, Ind.) provided a hot bat with a two-run double in the inning. The Patriots then added single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to come away with the 8-4 victory.

Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, Calif.) began to break out of his slump going 3-5 with an RBI. Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) and Santiago Arce (Chula Vista, Calif.) each picked up a pair of hits and a run batted in. Dominque Guevara (Oxnard, Calif.) and Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, Calif.) each added two hits and two and one runs scored, respectively.
