Patriot Soccer gets big home win

Friday, September 4 - The Patriot Soccer team hosted Hanover College today, in the first ever meeting between the schools (as far as we can tell). SCC was coming off a dominating performance in the season opener, but Hanover would prove to be a much tougher opponent. In the early going, SCC controlled the tempo and the ball, but Hanover held their defense in tight and were very disciplined in their play, keeping the Patriots out of the goal area.

Twenty six minutes into the first half, a St. Catharine miscue led to Hanover getting behind the SCC defense, and Josh Usiri netted the first goal of the game for Hanover. Undaunted, the Patriots pressed back and were able to even the score two minutes later when Patrick Williams fed Isaac Blanford for a goal.

With the score knotted at 1, the teams battled throughout the second half. Both teams fought hard, and the matchup seemed even. It looked like the game might be headed to overtime when SCC's Sheldon Lucas beat a defender near the Hanover goal and was taken down from behind in the penalty box. The foul resulted in a penalty kick, which Will Meza calmly put away for the game winner with only 7 minutes remaining.

The 2-1 victory puts SCC's season record at 2-0. The Patriots take the field again on Sunday at Spalding University at 6:00 pm.
