Patriot Baseball forces if-necessary game with 7-6 win

Box Score

The Patriot Baseball team (37-14) came from behind force an if-necessary after defeating Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) 7-6 in the finals of the Mid-South Conference Baseball Tournament at Bowling Green Ballpark in Bowling Green, Ky. The two teams will meet again tomorrow for the Mid-South Conference Championship. First-pitch is set for 2 p.m. ET.

Alfredo Bohorquez (Maracaibo, Venezuela) provided the difference in the ninth with a two-run single to give the Patriots the lead for good. The Patriots have now won their fifth straight win-or-go-home game.

The Blue Raiders (36-18) got off to a hot start to begin the game. They led 5-0 after just three innings. They extended their lead to 6-2 heading into the seventh inning, but once again the Patriot bats came from behind with three in the eighth and two in the ninth to come away with the 7-6 victory.

The Patriots got a run in the fifth thanks to an opposite field home run by Nick Rosso (Santa Barbara, Calif.). They added another in the sixth after Dominique Guevara (Oxnard, Calif.) reached on a fielder’s choice to score Lamont Calloway (Louisville, Ky.).

Lindsey Wilson looked to add runs late in the game, but the Patriot bullpen was able to hold the potent offense at bay. After the Blue Raiders added a run in the sixth, the Patriot relievers retired 10 of the final 11 batters they faced.

The Patriots started the comeback in the eighth inning with three runs on three hits and a Blue Raider error. After a ground out to open the inning, the Patriots responded with a single, a hit batter and a key error to load the bases. Guevara came through with a base knock to score one and then Francisco Gonzalez (San Diego, Calif.) added a two-run single to cut the deficit to one.

St. Catharine completed the comeback in the ninth with two runs on one hit. After back-to-back walks to open the inning, a wild pitch then moved the runners up into scoring position. After a walk and a strikeout, the Patriots had the bases loaded with one out. Alfredo Bohorquez ripped a two-run single to give the Patriots the lead. Ryan Hartman, however, was able to work his way out of the inning.

The one run lead was more than enough for Steven Borkowski (San Diego, Calif.). Borkowski – who has a no-hitter and now three saves in the tournament – recorded the final three outs to seal the victory for the Patriots.

The Patriot bullpen came up huge down the stretch. Carlos Cespedes (Santo Domingo, D.R.) made just his second appearance on bump this season. Cespedes pitched three innings allowing just one run on five hits.

Austin Willis-Greene (Beaufort, S.C.) picked up the win for the Patriots. Willis-Greene finished with two innings pitched allowing just one hit in his 14 pitch performance.
