Gonzalez and Borkowski Named MSC POW's

COLUMBIA, Ky. – St. Catharine's (Ky.) Francisco Gonzalez is the Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week and teammate Steven Borkowski is the MSC Pitcher of the Week, conference officials announced on Monday.

The weekly honor is the second of the season for Gonzalez and the first for Borkowski.

This week concludes the player of the week honors for the 2015 season.

Gonzalez batted .417 (10-for-24) with six runs and four RBIs to earn conference player of the week honors. He helped the Patriots win five of seven games, including reaching the MSC Tournament championship game after losing their tournament opener.

The San Diego, California, senior shortstop recorded two hits in elimination wins over Cumberlands (Ky.), Campbellsville (Ky.), Pikeville (Ky.) and Cumberland (Tenn.). Gonzalez went 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in the Patriots' 7-6 win over Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in the first championship game.

The first-team all-conference shortstop ranks second in the Mid-South in both batting average (.392) and on-base percentage (.467). Gonzalez is fourth in the conference in hits (65), sixth in doubles (14) and eighth in total bases (85).

Borkowski had a tremendous conference tournament, tossing a no-hitter and picking up three saves to earn conference pitcher of the week honors.

The San Diego, Calif., senior opened the week no-hitting Cumberlands in a 4-0 win. Borkowski just missed a perfect game, surrendering a single walk in the game. He struck out eight en route to improving to 7-4 on the season.

Borkowski followed the win by picking up two two-inning saves the next day. He allowed just one hit while striking out two in the Patriots' 5-3 win over No. 19-ranked Campbellsville in the first of two elimination games on the day. Later that night, he earned a save in an 8-4 win over Pikeville. Borkowski struck out two over his two innings of work to help the Patriots survive the day.

Borkowski closed out his tournament with a three-out save in the 7-6 win over Lindsey Wilson in the first championship game. He allowed one hit while striking out one to secure his fourth save of the season.

Borkowski ranked fourth in saves, fifth in wins and strikeouts (78), sixth in opponent's batting average (.224) and seventh in ERA (2.69).

St. Catharine is 37-15 overall following its run in the conference tournament.
