NAIA Opening Round begins Tuesday

For the first time in the history of the St. Catharine College Baseball program they will be playing in the NAIA Opening Round. They begin play in the Lawrenceville Bracket tomorrow when they take on Spring Arbor (Mich.) in Lawrenceville, Ga.

“We are really excited to be here and get going,” noted head coach Luther Bramblett. “Spring Arbor is a good club and they come from a good conference, we are going to have to play well to advance.”

The Cougars enter the game with a 30-16 record overall and an 18-10 record in the Crossroads League. They won the Crossroads Tournament by defeating Mouth Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) in the title game, 11-1.

The Patriots on the other hand, enter with a 37-15 record overall and a 15-5 record in the Mid-South Conference. The Bat Pats dropped their opener in the Mid-South Conference Tournament, but battled back to win five straight elimination games. The ended up falling to Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in the conference title game, 4-3.

The Cougars pitching staff has posted a team ERA of 3.07 in 340 innings pitched. The 3.07 earned run average ranks 11th best in the NAIA. They have three different arms that have thrown over 60 innings.

The Cougars are also solid at the plate posting a .267 batting average as a team. Chris Wegrzyn and JP Maracani have the best numbers for Spring Arbor. Wegrzyn has posted a .315 batting average with 47 hits and 10 doubles on the year. Maracani is just a shade under Wegrzyn with a .311 batting average. Maracani has also flashed some power with seven home runs and 13 doubles. He is also leading the team with 34 RBI’s on the year.

The Lawrenceville Bracket is being played at the Grizzly Baseball Complex on the campus of Georgia Gwinnett. First pitch is set for 11 a.m. ET.
