Soccer Drops Game to Shawnee State

Sunday, September 20 - In a game delayed by lightning and played on a sloppy field during intermittant rain showers, the SCC Soccer team lost a tight game to Shawnee State University today. The field was fast and sloppy due to the rain, and the game reflected that with players slipping and the ball skipping and sliding all over the surface. Shawnee State struck first 24 minutes into the first half as a ball skipped through the SCC defense and a defender slipped, leaving a path to goal open. SCC fought back to earn several chances, but the score remained 1-0 through the half.

In the second half, Shawnee State played a more defensive set, trying to hold the lead and counter-attack when possible. SCC controlled the play, and outshot Shawnee for the period. Their best chance came when Sheldon Lucas got free for a close range shot, but the Shawnee 'Keeper came up with an outstanding save to preserve the lead. SCC had several other opportunities and good shots, but were unable to put one away, and the game ended with the score Shawnee State 1 - St. Catharine 0.

The Patriots now stand at 4-2 on the season with Mid South Conference play starting next Saturday when they travel to West Virginia Tech.
